Blood and Transplant Research Units 2021

The NIHR is launching a new, single stage, competition to fund a number of NIHR Blood & Transplant Research Units (NIHR BTRUs).

The role of the BTRUs will be to support the research and operational needs of NHS Blood & Transplant (NHSBT) and will act as centres of excellence in multidisciplinary research in support of NHSBT. BTRUs will be to support the needs of NHSBT for research to improve the supply of blood, blood products, stem cells and tissues and organs for transplantation. The BTRU scheme will provide funding to:

  • create an environment where world-class research, focused on the needs of the NHSBT, can thrive • translate advances in research into benefits for users of NHSBT’s services;
  • focus on areas of greatest priority which will have the greatest impact on NHSBT services
  • provide high quality research evidence to inform decision-making by NHSBT
  • increase capacity and capability to conduct high quality multi-disciplinary blood and transplant related research in England

Research partnerships are sought in the following five priority areas:

  • Blood Donation
  • Organ Donation and Transplantation
  • Therapeutics • Data Driven Transfusion Practice
  • Transfusion and Transplantation Transmitted Infections
