A systematic review of parents’/carers' needs, and interventions to support parents/carers of
young people with mental health problems receiving mental health services: evidence synthesis
with stakeholder engagement to provide practical recommendations
RfPB Tier 3 submission for suite of systematic reviews and logic models. Medium level input (10.5 hours
advisor time) predominately discussing systematic review methodology, focus and rationale and critical
review of iterative drafts for stages 1 and 2. Application successful November 2021.
The planned impact of the study (to commence May 2022) is to direct future research and practice across
the UK with regards to improving support for parents/carers of young people with mental health problems.
Better support for parents/carers is likely to contribute to improved outcomes for the child/young person.
The support gained from RDS was invaluable. Significant expertise from the advisor in relation to the
methodology allowed us to ensure the scope of the proposed literature review was appropriate for the size
of the project. Excellent critical review of the drafts not only supported the PI to make significant
improvements to the application, but also pointed out where expansion in the team might be needed. The
friendly, constructive and focused support allowed me, as a first time NIHR PI, to develop my bid writing
skills further and ultimately submit a proposal that really did justice to the research idea.
