Public Involvement Research Cycle

The public can help:

Identifying & prioritising

  • inform research priorities
  • prioritise issues important to them as service users
  • identify new topics for research


  • clarify research questions
  • develop appropriate recruitment strategies
  • review and comment on questionnaires and data collection methods
  • prioritise possible outcome measures
  • promote best practice in patient involvement

Development of the grant proposal

  • advise on the plain English summary
  • ensure that support is in place for meaningful public involvement and that enough money has been set aside to do this
  • help to make the case for why the research is important to service users and the public

Undertaking & Managing 

  • give lay and patient perspectives throughout the research process
  • write clear patient information and consent forms
  • support communication of research updates, ensuring that they are patient friendly
  • assist in conducting interviews and surveys where appropriate

Analysing & interpreting

  • interpret data from a patient perspective
  • advise on the key messages and recommendations arising from the research data


  • advise on different ways to disseminate findings to diverse audiences
  • jointly present the findings with researchers
  • contribute to information leaflets aiming at local patient groups, hospitals, etc.
  • help distribute findings through informal networks


  • increase the likelihood that findings of research are implemented
  • play an advocacy role, championing the adoption of research findings
